About Us
We are a third generation architects family based in Latvia. Modern Schindel is an idea of Janis, architect, who is constantly looking for new ideas for his designs, but also loves history, nature and traditional craftsmanship. Modern Schindel production facility is located in our sheep farm in Straupe, Latvia - which is a side business of Janis and his brother, structural engineer Matiss since 2009. In 2023 we set up a small sawmill in our facility and Modern Schindel shares the production facility with traditional sawmill process. Running of Modern Schindel is a family adventure where three generations provide their share of knowledge, time and effort. We are joined by Kaspars, who is responsible for day-to day running of sheep operation, and his partner Ewa, who runs the production of the Modern Schindel.
Inspiration
In Summer of 2023 Janis and his wife Linda, and Matiss had a dream trip to Austria to visit legendary Spielberg for an F1 race. We stayed in 100 year old, traditionally build wood chalet in the Alps. This small farmers house had a wood shingle facade which had survived 100 years - life span of 4 generations. With experience of traditional wood buildings of Latvia in mind, Janis had an idea to replicate this technology in more modern form. Modern Schindel combines the aesthetics and environmentally responsible approach of traditional shingles - with modern production possibilities and longevity of ventilated facade creating variety of modern designs.
